Foreign Minister Timo Soini will attend the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 12 December. The meeting will discuss the external dimension of migration, EU-Africa relations and the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Over lunch, ministers will discuss developments in Syria.
In connection with migration, ministers will look at progress made in the partnership framework approach, which is based on the European Agenda on Migration, and follow-up to the Valletta Summit on Migration in 2015. Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, will give a briefing on the implementation on the partnership framework approach, including country-specific compacts.
The Foreign Affairs Council will hold a comprehensive debate on EU-Africa relations with particular focus on the EU’s strategic objectives in their development. Ministers will also prepare for the next EU-Africa Summit which will be held in November 2017.
The meeting will also discuss the internal political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and related measures to be taken by the EU.
Over lunch, ministers will follow up on the Syrian conflict, especially the situation in Aleppo and the humanitarian situation at large.
Ahead of the Council meeting, the EU and Cuba will sign the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement. The Council meeting will be followed by the signature of the constitutive agreement of the EU Trust Fund for Colombia.
